Cold night, warm mug. This protein hot cocoa is rich, chocolatey and ready in 5 minutes, with about 20g of plant protein from the Chocolate MycoProtein. It’s the drink you’ll want after a holiday walk, while you wrap gifts, or when the house finally gets quiet.

The trick is whisking the powder into a little warm milk first to make a smooth paste. Then pour in the rest and you get silky hot chocolate with no clumps.

Why you’ll love it

  • Tastes like a treat. Deep chocolate flavor, not chalky or thin like a lot of protein drinks.
  • Five minutes, one mug. Warm the milk, whisk, done.
  • Cozy without the sugar crash. Sweeten it just how you like it.

Our pantry picks

  • Sweetener: Want it sweeter? We stir in Lakanto Classic Monk Fruit Sweetener with Allulose. It’s an all-natural white sugar replacement, so you get the sweetness without the added sugar.
  • Maple syrup: For a cozy maple note, stir in a teaspoon of Lakanto Classic Maple Syrup. It’s sweetened with monk fruit, so you get real maple flavor with less sugar.
  • Milk: Whole milk makes it the creamiest. Oat milk is our favorite dairy-free pick.

Tips and swaps

  • Don’t boil the milk. Warm it until it steams. Boiling can make it grainy.
  • Make the paste first. Whisk the powder into 2 tablespoons of warm milk until smooth before adding the rest.
  • Use a frother for a foamy, café-style mug.

Make it your own

Add a drop of peppermint extract for a holiday peppermint cocoa, a pinch of cinnamon and cayenne for Mexican hot chocolate, or pile on whipped cream and mini marshmallows.

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops (40g) Chocolate MycoProtein
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or oat)
  • 1 tsp sweetener or maple syrup, optional (we use Lakanto Classic Monk Fruit Sweetener with Allulose or Lakanto Classic Maple Syrup)
  • Cinnamon, whipped cream or dark chocolate shavings, for topping
  • Handful of mini marshmallows

Steps

  1. Warm the milk in a small saucepan until it steams. Don't let it boil.
  2. Whisk the MycoProtein into 2 tablespoons of the warm milk in a mug until smooth.
  3. Pour in the rest of the milk while whisking. Stir in the sweetener if you like it sweeter.
  4. Top with a handful of mini marshmallows and a sprinkle of cinnamon or chocolate shavings.
